Department of Aquatic Resources

The Department of Aquatic Resources monitors and evaluates the state and development of aquatic ecosystems and how resource utilization affects these ecosystems. Research includes studies of fish and shellfish stocks, ecosystem analysis and interactions, spatial analyses, effects of human impact on fish and ecosystems, fisheries management and methods, aquaculture and its effects. Biological advice for management and sustainable use is one of the department's main tasks, as well as being responsible for Sweden's part of the EU's marine data collection program and conducting national environmental monitoring. The department has eight locations, with main offices in Uppsala (Ultuna), Öregrund, Lysekil, Stockholm (Drottningholm) and three field stations.

We are looking for a competent researcher to SLU Aqua, Freshwater Laboratory

The position focuses on recreational fishing and environmental analysis for sustainable management of fish and crayfish in Vänern, Vättern, Mälaren, Hjälmaren, and Storsjön. The work includes data collection, collaboration with authorities, scientific publishing, and applications for external research funding.

About the job

You will primarily work with recreational fishing issues and environmental analysis focusing on sustainable management of fish and crayfish in some of Europe's largest and most significant lakes: Vänern, Vättern, Mälaren, Hjälmaren, and Storsjön in Jämtland. Your tasks will include research and the development of knowledge bases to support authorities in managing sport and recreational fishing at regional, national, and international levels. This includes collaboration with managing authorities and cooperation with fishing organizations, such as the Swedish Agency for Marine and Water Management, county administrative boards, interest organizations, and other relevant actors. A central part of your tasks will be to lead and coordinate data collection related to recreational fishing, including driving and further developing the digital reporting system Spöreg. The work as a researcher also includes scientific publishing and actively seeking research funding. Tasks may change over time according to the needs of the organization.

Your background

You have a strong interest and previous experience in working with recreational and sport fishing issues. As a person, you are responsible, analytical, and communicative, and you excel in both written and oral communication. You enjoy and are skilled at collaborating, building, and maintaining networks. You have a quick learning ability, are used to working systematically, and have a flexible approach to your tasks and responsibilities. You enjoy working in a team but are also comfortable working independently.

Eligibility requirements

You must:

  • Have obtained a doctoral degree before starting the position, in biology/ecology or another relevant field
  • Demonstrate competence in relevant statistical analysis and have very good analytical skills
  • Demonstrate excellent organizational and collaborative skills
  • Demonstrate very good communication skills
  • Demonstrate good knowledge of English and Swedish, both spoken and written

Meritorious:

  • Experience in project management
  • Experience in collaboration with actors outside academia
  • Experience in analyzing statistics from recreational and commercial fishing
  • Experience in fisheries management
  • Ability to combine data analysis with advice and collaboration
  • Knowledge of database management and programming in R
